Abstract

Summary The solid phase immunocaptation test (SPIT) was applied to detection of Paramyxovirus parainfluenzae types 1, 2 and 3 and mumps IgM antibodies. The test was confirmed to be reproducible, reliable and not susceptible to rheumatoid factor presence. SPIT results were compared with those obtained with serum ultracentrifugation or complement fixation tests. They demonstrated that SPIT had a higher sensitivity than the other techniques. Most often, there was no correlation with complement fixation test results even when titres were very high. Concomitant reactions were observed with 2 antigens or more for 28% of sera. However, 52% of them had SPIT titres clearly higher for one antigen than for the others. Indeed, in most cases, this technique seems a valuable tool to detect specific IgM antibodies against the studied antigens.
