Abstract

A nongrey treatment of the nonisothermal, infrared radiative-transfer problem is formulated in terms of a rationally determined mean absorption coefficient, α a . The relation between α a and the equivalent isothermal total-band absorptance is established. A simplified procedure for using a two-term Gaussian-quadrature formula to evaluate the integrals in the general formulation is shown to be adequate. Results compare well with other theories and with experiments.
