Abstract

Burns and scalds are very commonly encountered incidents among the household accidents. Patients suffering from scalds have epidermas and endodermas damage in the wounded area and it usually take 3-8 weeks for healing with possible scar formation. Our group has successfully developed bacterial expression system for cost-effective production of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (EGF) and human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) with authentic primary structure and potent bioactivity. Our EGF and bFGF have been shown to be successful in treating various hard-to-heal wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, Steven-Johnson syndrome and bedsores. In this communication, we report three successful cases of using our recombinant EGF in treating scald wounds. All the three cases showed expedited healing of the scalded wounds with no scar formation. The results not only support that our recombinant EGF possess potent bioactivity in treating scalds wound, but also revealed that the authenticity and bioactivities of recombinant EGF are crucial for medical applications.
