Abstract

The necessity to monitor civil engineering structures becomes obvious with the ageing of the existing infrastructure. However, for this purpose reliable sensors and monitoring systems need to be available. Because of their typical advantages, optical fibre sensors are more and more being used for structural monitoring. This paper gives a limited overview of the different types of optical fibre sensors used in the construction industry and focuses on applications in concrete structures. A few examples of the different types of sensors will be given and special attention will be paid to one kind of optical sensor: the Bragg grating sensor.
