Abstract

Objective To explore the neuroendoscopic application in the surgical treatment of thalamic gliomas. Methods A total of 10 patients with thalamic glioma between December 2009 to December 2013 in Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University were retrospectively analyzed. The 10 cases include 5 cases of medial type, 3 cases of anterior type and 2 cases of abdominal rear type. The operations were performed by using neuroendoscope under the neuronavigation guidance. All the cases were followed up and measured by the Karnofsky performance scale(KPS). Results Six cases were totally removed, 3 cases were subtotally removed and 1 case underwent biopsy.2 cases suffered hemiparesis and speech difficulty after operation but recovered within 3 months.2 cases with hemiplegia improved significantly, KPS score increased from 60-70 before operation to 80-90 after operation.1 case was performed reoperation because of tumor cavity effusion.6 cases received postoperative radio-chemotherapy, 1 case was treated without any other therapy, 3 cases were regularly followed up.All cases were followed up from 3 months to 1 year, 1 case died of recurrence, KPS score of other patients increased after operation. Conclusion A portion of thalamic gliomas could be effectively removed by using neuroendoscope under the neuronavigation guidance and the incidence of postoperative neurological dysfunction could be reduced.
