Abstract
Citric acid in acetic anhydride has been developed as a new chromogenic and fluorogenic reagent for the detection of 5 major opium alkaloids on thin layer plates. The colours and the fluorescence characteristics are reported. The sensitivity of the reagent by fluorescence has been found to be 0.5μg. The advantages of this reagent over some of the existing reagents are discussed.
