Abstract

The melting phenomena of a semi-infinite slab, initially at a uniform subcooled temperature, supported by a conducting substrate, and heated by a volume distributed source in the substrate, are investigated with the heat balance integral method. A double quadratic function needed in the heat balance integral method is suggested and examined to represent the temperature profile in the subcooled solid which undergoes a phase change. The effects of the subcooling, the induction frequency, and the conductivity of substrate are discussed.
