Abstract
A general introduction to the application of free-electron lasers is given on the basis of published experimental data. Since the majority of published applications is in the field of solid state physics and related topics, special attention is given to the use of far infrared and infrared radiation in this context. An overview of current activities as well as some examples of future applications in different fields of physics, material research, biology and medicine are presented.
