Abstract

Objective To explore the application and its clinical outcomes of dynamic hinged external fixators in the treatment of terrible triad of the elbow. Methods A total of 20 patients with the terrible triad of the elbow treated with dynamic hinged external fixators during January 2013 to December 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. The average age was 36.5 years, ranging from 18 to 70 years. The average duration of follow-up was 15.2 months, ranging from 6 to 24 months. The function of the elbow was evaluated with Mayo Elbow Performance Score. Results At the final follow-up there was neither joint pain nor joint instability. The average range of flexion and extension was (122.5±25.4)°. The average motion of forearm rotation was (168.5±10.6)°. The average Mayo Elbow Performance Score was (90.1±8.3) points. The overall satisfactory rate was 90%. Conclusion Dynamic hinged external fixators can enhance postoperative elbow stability in patients with terrible triad of the elbow. This procedure is beneficial for early functional exercise and significantly decreases the disability rate caused by complex damage to the elbow. Key words: Elbow joint; Fractures, bone; Dislocations; Coronoid process
