Abstract
The paper aims at an improvement of both students’ English-speaking performance and in-class participation in today’s college English class. Actual teaching experiment shows that traditional teaching mothed, though forcing students to take-in knowledge passively, facilitates their accumulation of basic knowledge points like vocabulary, sentence pattern, grammar, etc. Meanwhile, with the help of communicative approach, all students are encouraged to brainstorm and take part in activities more actively. Moreover, at the end of the in-class activity, they will get to know their weak points or mistakes through peer evaluation and the teacher’s evaluation, and correct them based on the knowledge they have learnt by the previous traditional language teaching part. It is safe to draw a conclusion that a combination of both traditional teaching method and communicative approach can stimulate students’ interest in learning while laying a solid language foundation, hence promote their accuracy and fluency in oral speech.
