Abstract

The demand for cement for construction is directly proportional to the infrastructural needs of the society. Hence cement has become an inevitable part of the construction industry as it acts as an excellent binder. The production process of cement ejects carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere, which is highly detrimental to the life of the planet in terms of global warming. Previous literature reveals that the synthesis of one tonne of cement produces around one tonne of greenhouse gas to the environment. Geopolymer binder, an alternative to cement binder, is completely devoid of cement and attains strength by polymeric reaction. The present paper reviews the application of clay in geopolymer paste or mortar or concrete. An effort has been made to review the performance of clay in geopolymers (both as source material and fine aggregate). An evaluation on strength and durability parameters of clay based geopolymers were conducted and elucidated. Also, the influence of thermal activation of clays in geopolymer system has been analysed and presented. From the review of literature, it was observed that the clay incorporated geopolymers are eco-friendly. The incorporation of thermally activated clay in the geopolymer system was observed to be an effective method in improving the strength and durability properties.
