Abstract

An overview of the feasibility, capabilities and limitations of CFD as a design tool to assess the performance on different environmental aspects of residential buildings in Hong Kong is provided, The state-of-art developments of CFD in various areas of building services engineering are briefly reviewed. Due to the rapid development of high rise buildings in Hong Kong, there is a substantial need to reformulate some up-to-date regulations to govern the safety and environmental issues of the high rise buildings. One of the promising assessment approaches is to use CFD to calculate certain relevant performance index for these buildings. As an example, CFD assessment methods on two environmental issues of buildings, namely the pedestrian wind level and air conditioner’s heat rejection, are outlined with emphasis on the real experiences in the Implementation of CFD for the design of a high rise estate.
