Abstract

To develop new type of electrical machines with great rate and larger power, a new type of brushes which consists of the graphite matrix and C/Cu composite materials was investigated. These brushes possess better electric conductivity, high current carrying capacity and good wear resistance as well as performance designability. In order to adapt various demands for different kinds of electrical machines, varied brushes were optimally designed by choosing the available graphite matrices and changing the distribution of the C/Cu composite materials in brushes. Results show that new brushes have excellent performance, for example, the number of the C/Cu composite brushes was halved comparing with the commercial brushes under the same condition of the electrical machine with 125,000 Kw power at the velocity of 70 m/sec. It means that the new type of the composite brush has great potential in improving the structure of the great electrical machines.
