Application of carotid ultrasonography in male's vascular health evaluation

Abstract

Objective The measure of carotid ultrasonography was carried out to clarity its effect in vascular health evaluation on men. Methods The study population comprised 298 young men with the exception of cardiac and cerebral vascular diseases. They were divided into two groups by their life style. In first group they must work and rest according to schedules with enhancing a physical training. But in second group they need not living and physical training strictly. We have reported the method of carotid ultrasonography before. Results Normal scope of the mean value of carotid intima-media thickness(IMT)in health young men were(0. 54±0.10)mm in left carotid bulb,(0.52±0. 09)mm in right carotid bulb,(0. 45±0.09)mm in left distal segment,(0. 49±0. 09)mm in right distal segment,(0.49±0.09)mm in left proximal segment,(0. 49±0.08)mm in right proximal segment The detectable rate of larger IMT(≥0. 9 mm)were 4% in first group and 14% in second group respective. The detectable rate of plaques was 0 in first group and 1. 5% in second group respective. There were significant difference in both IMT and its thicker place among different ages and detected positions. IMT increased with age. IMT in carotid bulb was bigger than in proximal segment and distal segment Also IMT in left carotid bulb was larger than in right carotid bulb. The mean value of IMT in first group is obviously smaller than in second group. Age and strain work years are the main factors for results of carotid ultrasonography. Blood pressure, the level of heart rate, weight index and strength and way of physical training are also some impact factors. Conclusion The carotid artery wall imaging is awindowof subclinical atherosclerosis. The measure of carotid ultrasonography is not only very important for early warning atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk to the common crowd but also has practical value for evaluating vessel health on young men.
