Abstract
Objective To investigate the value of capsule endoscopy in diagnosing different small bowel diseases. Methods Seventy-eight cases accepted capsule endoscopy examination.Among the 78 patients, there were 45 cases of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding,10 cases of abdominal pain,8 cases of diarrhea,5 cases of abdominal distention,3 cases of abdominal pain concomitant diarrhea,2 cases of diarrhea concomitant abdominal distention, and 5 cases of other symptoms.Gastric and small bowel transit time and diagnostic yield were valuated. Results Sixty-one cases crossed over the ileocecal valves, and 5 cases retarded in gastric. The capsule endoscopy remained in the stomach for an average of 80.3 min.The mean transit time in the small bowel was 291.5 min.The total detectable rate of capsule endoscopy was 74.36%.The detectable rate of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding was 88.89%,abdominal pain was 80.00%,diarrhea was 37.50%,abdominal pain concomitant diarrhea was 66.67%,and abdominal pain concomitant abdominal distention was 33.33%.The detectable rate of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding was significantly higher than diarrhea and diarrhea concomitant abdominal distention. All the patients had no discomfortable feeling and complication during the examination. Conclusions The detectable rate of capsule endoscopy in small bowel diseases was high.Capsule endoscopy was safe and convenient. So capsule endoscopy could be used as the effective inspection method of small bowel diseases.
