Abstract

The article discusses the problem of the impact of crew competence level, including ship’s engine crew, on the amount of operational losses and technical failures. Errors made at a higher decision level generate, as a result of wrong decisions in the operation of the ship, serious consequences, including the loss of the ship. A higher qualification level decreases the probability of improper operation of the ship while increasing the level of safety of navigation, which the ship is a participant of.Expert systems are a modern tool which can support and automate decision making at sea as well as assist ship owners in the selection of competent deck and machine crew. The article presents as an example of a possible use of artificial intelligence, the application of an expert system which is designed to support a ship owner in managing ships’ machine crews in the aspect of shipping safety.
