Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of PDCA in the management of central sterile supply department (CSSD) and its influence on nosocomial infection control. Methods Each fifty inpatients were randomly selected before and after the implementation of PDCA cycle management in CSSD of our hospital (February to August in 2017, September 2017 to February 2018). The scores of various management (equipment management, environmental management, cleaning management, packaging management) and the eligibility rate of sterilization of medical devices before and after the implementation of PDCA management were observed and compared. The hospitalization time was recorded. During the period, the rate of surgical incision infection was observed. Results After PDCA cycle intervention, CSSD staff scored higher on equipment management, environmental management, cleaning and packaging of surgical instruments than before (P<0.05), and the rate of surgical incision infection in hospitalized patients was lower than before (2.00% vs.14.00%) (P<0.05), and the qualified rate of sterilization of medical instruments was higher than before (96.20% vs.71.15%) (P<0.05). Conclusion PDCA cycle management can improve the management score and the eligibility rate of sterilization of medical devices in hospital CSSD, and has a significant effect on reducing the incidence of nosocomial infection. Key words: PDCA cycle; CSSD; Qualified sterilization rate; Quality control; Nosocomial infection
