Abstract
Abstract Materials were applied to mature Red Delicious trees with high SJS population densities in Fairfield, VA. Two applications ca 1 wk apart were directed against crawlers of both SJS generations. The spray dates were Jun 2 and 8, and Aug 9 and 18. Each treatment was represented by 4 single-tree replicates in a completely randomized design. Unsprayed buffer tree were left between sprayed trees. Applications were made with a truck-mounted hydraulic sprayer with handgun attachment. Scale populations were assessed by counting scale-infested fruit after each generation of crawlers had settled (on Jul 1 and Sep 7, respectively). Fifty fruit per tree were evaluated. Mite populations were sampled on several dates using 20-leaf samples and a leaf-brushing machine. Aphids were evaluated by counting aphid-infested shoots over a 3-min period on Jun 14.
