Abstract

The chapter focuses on ANZUS Pact of 1951. The ANZUS (Australia, New Zealand and The United States) Pact is a Pacific Ocean regional security treaty which was signed by the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and the United States in San Francisco on September 1, 1951, and came into force on April 29, 1952. The Pact aims to strengthen the fabric of peace and coordinating efforts for collective security and collective self-defence in the Pacific area. In the preamble, the parties took account of the then existing military presence of the United States in the Pacific area as well as the military obligations of Australia and New Zealand, as members of the British Commonwealth, outside as well as inside that area. Regular consultation under the ANZUS Pact, especially through the military board under the council, has developed close regional cooperation, based on common interests and shared aspirations, between the signatory States in the Pacific region.
