Abstract
Primary endocrine function of ovarian theca-interstitial cells involves testosterone production; luteinizing hormone (LH) and insulin are important stimulators of this process. Recently, we have demonstrated that testosterone production is also stimulated by moderate oxidative stress and decreased by antioxidants. These observations have clinical relevance to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition associated with elevated LH, hyperinsulinemia, increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant reserve.
