Abstract
Background and Aims: There is evidence, that celiac disease (CD) could be associated with non-traditional atherogenic risk factors. High density lipoproteins (HDL) constitute the only antiatherogenic fraction, being the inhibition of low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation one of its main functions. This capacity depends on different HDL-associated components, such as the antioxidant enzyme paraoxonase (PON1). To assess the relationship between CD and the activity of PON1 in recently diagnosed children compared to healthy controls, and the effect of gluten-free diet (GFD).
