Abstract
The oxidation of perylene in molten antimony trichloride has been studied by the Gouy method. Radical-cation formation is complete at low concentrations, but dimerisation, polymerisation, or formation of a chloroantimonate complex occurs at higher concentrations (the nature of the reaction depends on the oxidant). Perylene is only partially oxidised in the solid 1 : 1 complex with antimony pentachloride.
