Abstract
Insect pest management is facing the economic and ecological challenge worldwide due to the human and environmental hazards caused by the synthetic pesticide chemicals majority. A search for an alternate technique for the insect pests’ management arises in recent years. The present study was carried out under laboratory conditions, to evaluate the potential of Capparis spinosa L. as control agents against an important pest in Tunisia, Spodoptera littoralis, by a leaf dipping bioassay method. Result showed that C. spinosa leaves extracted with hexane and methanol induced a potent insecticidal effect with 100% mortality followed by stem extracts with a moderate insecticidal activity (50% of mortality) after 7 days of treatment. The ingestion of aqueous and organic extract by the third instar larvae significantly reduced the consumption, growth rates and utilisation of the ingested and digested food, and reduced digestibility. Thus, the feeding deterrence was markedly influenced when larvae fed on leave and stem extracted by chloroform, which caused more than 90% antifeeding effect. Key words: Aqueous extracts, antifeeding effect, organic extracts, insecticidal activity, toxicity.
