Abstract

Domino theory originated in the fears of the late 1940s and provided the geopolitical basis for the military involvement of the US in Indochina. What we can infer of the logic and assumptions of this theory are sadly lacking as abstractions of geographical processes. To structure thought in terms of a continuous representation of fields of influence, rather than the drastic click of a domino, might provide deeper understanding for more prudent action. Standing somewhere between a field theory and the binary, one-dimensionality of dominoes, linkage theory is potentially a superior geopolitical model, offering a prescription for indirect manoeuvering. The limited network perceived in practice did not, however, allow for a great degree of flexibility.
