Abstract
Objective: To exzamine the antioxidant and the antidiabetic activities of Acanthopanax gracilistylus (A. gracilistylus) leaves, which is a traditional Chinese medicine included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and it is often used to make wine. Methods: A. gracilistylus leaves were extracted with 95 % ethanol. Antidiabetic properties were evaluated in α-glucosidase, α-amylase and PTP1B inhibition assays. Antioxidant capacity was determined according to the sample’s ability to scavenge DPPH and ABTS radicals. Results: As the results, antidiabetic activities were estimated by the inhibitory activities with α-glucosidase (IC50 76.32 ± 0.41 μg/mL), α-amylase (IC50 92.71 ± 0.39 μg/mL), and PTP1B (IC50 50.60 ± 0.44 μg/mL). The IC50 value of the A. gracilistylus leaves ethanol extract for antioxidant activities were 94.52 ± 0.28 μg/mL (DPPH radical scavenging) and 77.38 ± 0.32 μg/mL (ABTS radical scavenging). Therefore, the A. gracilistylus leaves extract significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited the antidiabetic and antioxidant effects. Conclusion: These findings indicated that A. gracilistylus leaves can be use for the diabetes mellitus treatment and/or functional food.
