Abstract
Brickellia cavanillesii (Cass.) A. Gray (Asteraceae) is widely used for treating ulcers, dyspepsia, and diabetes. The essential oil of aerial parts of the plant was obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC-MS. A total of 31 constituents (98.0%) were identified. Desmethylisoencecalin (1) and compounds 2 – 4 were the major components. SPME-HS analysis using different fibers allowed also the detection of 1. The oil showed (31, 100, and 316 mg/kg) antihyperglycemic action when tested in normal and diabetic (NA-STZ/50 – 130 mg/kg) mice using the sucrose tolerance test.
