Abstract

To detect the presence of Maedi-Visna virus in sheep in the Juazeiro microregion, Bahia, 919 serum samples were evaluated by an agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID). The samples were collected in eight of the cities that make up this microregion: Juazeiro, Sento Se, Sobradinho, Pilao Arcado, Campo Alegre de Lourdes, Remanso, Casa Nova and Curaca. A positive reaction to AGID was evidenced in 0,34% of the sheep sampled. We concluded that antibodies against sheep lentivirus are present in this microregion, which is probably due to the predominance of native animals in the investigated farms.
