Abstract

The genus Monarda (family Lamiaceae) contains 15-30 species of which the most studied are Monarda citriodora, Monarda fistulosa, Monarda didyma and Monarda punctata. Phytochemical studies on Monarda species resulted in the identification of a wide spectrum of phytoconstituents, including oxygenated monoterpenes (thymol, carvacrol, borneol, geraniol), thymoquinone, phenolics, triterpenoids, monoterpene glycosides, carbohydrate, carotenoids, phenolic complex (flavonoids, anthocyanins, phenolic acids) and ascorbic acid. Essential oils are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria or viruses, because they can manifest antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic activity.
