Abstract

The sea star (Asteroidea) is reported to have the potency to be a source of antimicrobial agent. An exploration study was conducted to reveal the potency of antibacterial bioactive of sea star from Maluku waters. This study aimed to determine the bioactive compounds of the Linckia laevigata extract and their antimicrobial activity. The results of qualitative phytochemical test showed that the L. laevigata extract contains flavonoid and saponin. The antimicrobial activity of the L. laevigata extract was demonstrated by an inhibition zone diameter of 29.5 mm against Enterobacter aeuregens and 22.1 mm against Clostridium botulinum. The L. laevigata extract has been proven to have antibacterial activityagainst food pathogenic bacteria.
