Some of the ideas we talked about may have found expression in this brief article, although Dr. Sturtevant cannot be held responsible for any of the views expressed. Concern for anthropological research in museums is reflected in the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research's program of Museum Research Fellowships in Ethnology and by the Committee for Anthropological Research in Museums (CARM) of the American Anthropological Association, of which Sturtevant and I are members. Discussions with two of CARM's members, Stephan Borhegyi and William Fenton, during a symposium organized by CARM at the meetings of the Central States Anthropological Society and the American Ethnological Society in Detroit in May 1968 initiated this paper.
