Abstract
The anterior approach to treating cervical spine pathology has been particularly successful and was popularized by Bailey and Badgley in the 1950's for the treatment of traumatic dislocations and destructive vertebral lesions. 1 The enormous success that was observed with the anterior approach to the cervical spine led to its widespread popularity. 2–11 During the past 40 years, numerous refinements in the anterior approach for the treatment of cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy have been developed. 8 The following article is a review of the indications for anterior cervical surgery, particularly in the setting of radiculopathy and myelopathy, as well as a description of the fusion techniques preferred by the senior author.
