Abstract
This paper presents an antenna placement analysis and optimization approach which was conducted for two new South African Navy (SAN) vessel types. The design and construction of these vessels fall under SAN Projects HOTEL and BIRO. Naval vessels typically have requirements for many antennas (e.g. communications, navigation, radar) to be placed in close proximity to one another, due to the limited space available for their placement. Antenna placement optimization is therefore a vital step in the design of a naval vessel in order to ensure the correct installed performance, and as well as acceptable levels of mutual interference (i.e. co-located performance) is achieved.
