Abstract
The giant Kohn anomaly recently observed in the low temperature, metastable fcc-phase of lanthanum is shown to arise from a sharp nesting feature of the Fermi surface. The calculated phonon dispersion curves exhibit a strong, narrow dip in the transverse (111) branch at precisely the experimental wave vector. Further calculations at 14% smaller volume indicate this branch becomes softer with pressure, which helps explain the unusual negative thermal expansion and the observed structural transition near 50 kbar.
