Abstract

The microstructure of AA2024 T351 was characterised by light and scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Mainly three types of intermetallics (θ phase, S phase and an Al–Fe–Si–Mn–Cu phase) were identified. The anodic oxide formation on AA2024 was studied by electrochemical measurements between 0 and 10 VSCE in sulphuric and citric acid based electrolytes. The cyclic voltammetry clearly showed the influence of the intermetallics during anodisation. Oxygen evolution took place on the intermetallics at simultaneously anodic dissolution of themselves. Furthermore, the influence of the electrolytes on the oxide layer structure was shown by TEM cross-sections. Oxide layers formed in sulphuric acid (pH 0) show the common disordered pore structure. Oxide layers formed in citric acid (pH 1) are completely free of pores.
