Abstract

The Anniversary Dinner for 1952 was held at the Dorchester Hotel on 1 December 1952 as St Andrew’s day fell this year on a Sunday. The toast of ‘The Royal Society of London'’ was proposed by the Rt Hon. The Earl of Radnor, who said : ‘It is a great honour to be asked to propose the toast of the Royal Society although I must confess that the prospect of doing so has filled me with apprehension. Your Secretary, however, very kindly sent me a certain amount of literature to assist me, from which I find that not only have those who have undertaken this task in recent years been far more eminent than I but they have also almost created a precedent of declaring their unworthiness to undertake the task. I do not propose to follow that precedent because I think it goes with saying!
