Abstract

AbstractThe Most familiar version of Anne Bronte's last poem is that which Charlotte printed in 1850, beginning “I hoped that with the brave and strong, My portioned task might lie.” It is a drastically edited version. Only the Shakespeare Head edition has the full text; this text was also printed in the Transactions, Vol. VIII Part xlii, by C. W. Hatfield, who gave an account of the textual history of the poem and reprinted it side by side with the 1850 version.
