Abstract
Conformations of macromolecules in dilute solutions of polymers (or polyelectrolytes) are investigated by taking into account the action of an external stimulus such as an applied electric field or a flow. The investigation is performed on the basis of a continuum model of dilute solutions developed previously by the authors within the framework of the thermodynamics with internal variables. Electromechanical couplings between polarization and conformation are considered through an electrostrictive scalar quantity. The equilibrium conformations and their stability are examined via a physically sound expression of the free energy function. A simple thermodynamic account of the mechanochemical effect is also given.
