Abstract
A 200 g batch of neptunium oxide was purified using a combined nitrate and chloride anion exchange procedure which utilized an in situ conversion of the loaded neptunium nitrate complex to the chloride complex. The in situ conversion reduced the processing time and neptunium losses which had been previously experienced with a two step nitrate and chloride process. No adverse effect on the purity of the NpO 2 product was observed. The actinide content of the purified NpO 2 product was < 0·1 ppm of plutonium and americium, < 0·2 ppm thorium, and 7 ppm uranium. The total of all impurities was 407 ppm.
