Abstract

Many anions have a marked effect on the production of metal atoms in the flame. The mechanism of the emission-enhancing effect of anions is unknown in most cases. The effect of ClO−4, AlO−2, SO2−4 anions on the determination of alkali, alkaline earth and transition metals was studied as a function of the excess of hydrogen and the flame profile measured under various experimental conditions. A difference was found between the atomic absorption and flame photometric results for transition metals. On the basis of the results, we tried to explain the mechanism of the effect of anions on the flame photometric and atomic absorption determination of metals.
