Abstract

A method is presented for making lattice dynamical calculations of thermodynamic properties of the inert gas solids which extend continuously from low to high temperatures and which do not employ any temperature limit approximation. Expressions for the cubic and quartic anharmonic free energies are discussed and an unusual approximation involving the Delta function is considered. It is found that the replacement of the Delta function in the cubic anharmonic term by a factor 1/N does not significantly affect the thermodynamic properties which the model predicts. The validity of the model is investigated.
