Abstract

Calculations of angular differential cross sections in charge exchange collisions between Ar 6+ and He in the 1.6–25 eV/u energy range have been performed. Results from a fully quantal model potential method and from a classical trajectory multichannel Landau-Zener (MCLZ) method are compared. Allowing for singly excited states on Ar 5+, and after convolution with a typical experimental resolution, the two methods are in fair agreement. Recent experimental results do not, however, support the theoretical findings at the lowest energies. We propose that population of final states of the type 3s3p3d on Ar 5+, which were not included in the original calculations, are the reason for this discrepancy. A MCLZ calculation including these channels gives support to this hypothesis.
