Abstract
The undistorted line shape in X-ray absorption may be obtained by analyzing the total photoelectric yield from solids as a function of the angle of incidence. This method is applied to the La3d absorption spectrum of LaF3. An Auger half-width of Γ = 0.22 eV is found for the La3d94f1 levels, whereas the autoionization from the 3d9324f1 level to the continuum gives an additional broadening of Γ = 0.3 eV.
