Abstract
SUMMARY The advent of laser airway surgery has enabled surgeons to ablate lesions precisely with little damage to the underlying tissues. The result has been reduced pain and edema as compared with more conventional surgical techniques. However, the possibility of an airway fire necessitates that the anesthesiologist understand the modifications in anesthetic technique and special equipment necessary for patient safety in these cases. The incidence of airway fires can be reduced to zero with the use of proper equipment, an understanding of laser radiation, and cooperation among the operating room staff.
