Abstract

Andrei Ershov was one of the Russian pioneers in the field of theoretical and system programming, and the founder of the Siberian School of Computer Science. His academic activities have been widely recognized, both in Russia and in other countries. In 1974, he was honored as a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society. In 1981, he received the Silver Core Award for services rendered to the IFIP. The brilliant lectures of Andrei Ershov were always the focus of public attention. Especially notable were his lectures on the "Aesthetic and Human Factor in Programming," presented at the AFIPS Spring Joint Computer Conference in 1972, and on "Programming as Second Literacy" presented at the Third World Congress "Computer in Education" in 1981 in Lausanne. Ershov was an extremely gifted scientist, teacher, and fighter for his ideas, as well as a bright and multifaceted person. He wrote poetry, translated the works of R. Kipling and other English poets, and enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Andrei Ershov and working with him will always remember his vision, achievements, and generous magnanimity.
