Abstract
Abstract The Andean Community Court of Justice (‘Court’) is currently the principal mechanism of the → Andean Community of Nations (CAN) for the interpretation of the Cartagena Agreement and CAN law, and for the resolution of disputes involving or affecting the Community. The Cartagena Agreement did not originally provide for a court but instead provided first for the informal resolution of disputes involving the treaty by the Community’s Commission and, in the event that this process was unsuccessful, by arbitration under the Latin American Free Trade Association (‘LAFTA’) Dispute Settlement Protocol (7 ILM 747; see also → Latin American Integration Association [ALADI]).
