Abstract
Although plants form the bulk of the global bio- and necromass, ancient plant DNA has not been exploited to the extent of comparable animal studies. Furthermore, ancient DNA (aDNA) studies are fraught with potential pitfalls that complicate analyses and place limits upon what aDNA studies can achieve. However, DNA has been successfully recovered from a wide range of old plant material, including samples that are hundreds of thousands of years old. Therefore, if appropriate care is taken in choosing samples and undertaking analyses, valuable data can be recovered that can provide otherwise unobtainable insights into Quaternary science.
