Abstract
Upper cervical spine is defined by atloido-occipital and atlas-axis joints, and C2-C3 intervertebral disk. Six synovial joints are involved mainly in cervical rotations. Inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, metabolic disorders and osteoarthritis might be located at these sites. Plain radiographs are of major importance, mainly dynamic lateral views. These views allow detecting anterior C1-C2 subluxation. CT-scan and magnetic resonance imaging are useful to better characterization in specific settings.
