Abstract

From the analytical studies on the dynamics of a single mode, two-level, cavity loss (or pump) modulated laser, we make the following predictions regarding the period doubling bifurcations from the harmonic solutions. Close to the period-two subharmonic resonance point (the modulation frequency (g̃w) is equal to twice the relaxation oscillation frequency (Ω) of the laser), the period doubling will be supercritical in the high frequency side (g̃w > 2Ω). For g̃w<2Ω, the period doubling will be subcritical; the resulting saddle period two will subsequently turn (saddle node bifurcation) to give birth to a stable period two.
