Abstract

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and ambient backscatter technologies have great potential for accelerating the promotion of ultra-low-power applications due to their reflecting environmental radio frequency (RF) signals. This letter introduces a novel model that integrates IRS, backscatter and wireless powered technologies, in which the device-to-device (D2D) terminals communicate in a self-sustainable manner. Then, the analytical expressions of system performance, including coverage probability and average throughput, are derived. The system performance is finally optimized by adjusting the IRS phase shifts and working mode of D2D transmitter, and experimentally tested and verified.
