Abstract

Two analytical methods are discussed to determine the response time of an open canal system after a change in flow rate. The first method of canal routing is a simple method and is used to determine the filling time of short canal reaches. The prediction error increases for longer canal reaches as a result of neglecting the non-uniform flow conditions. The second method to determine the response time after a change in flow rate, the diffusion approximation, is a more accurate method and valid for canal reaches of any length.
